Contrave – The New Weight Loss Pill – Advantages and Disadvantages
Recently, a new weight loss pill, Contrave, from Orexugen Therapetics is gaining popularity because of its high potential. It is a combination of two powerful drugs—naltrexone and Wellbutrin—addiction and antidepressant drugs.
Despite still being in the testing stages, this weight loss pill promises an anti-obesity medication. We may be now looking at a new shining star in the weight loss arena. Is this just another dangling carrot for the weight loss market to entice people who don’t want to exercise and eat right.
Does this pill work?
Contrave is a combination of naltrexone, a treatment to opium addiction withdrawal, and Wellbutrin, an antidepressant. Current studies show that Contrave can effectively reduce a patient’s metabolic syndrome and decrease incidences of obesity and risks of diabetes and heart disease. It takes a new approach in battling obesity by targeting neurological causes instead of the usual suppressing of appetite or altering metabolic function.
This drug is formulated to function not in the belly but in the hypothalamic center of the brain. By working there, it reduces a person’s appetite, blocks beta-endorphin hormone which limits weight loss, and manages the body temperature and how the body burns energy.
This medication is still in its clinical trial stage, and as such, features about Contrave are relatively few. However, Contrave will most likely be available by prescription since it is composed of potent ingredients that have potentially alarming side effects.
The one thing about drugs, sometimes the side effects are worse than why you are taking the drug in the first place.
What are the advantages?
In a clinical trial of 700 obese people with an average weight of 223 pounds, it was found that those who used Contrave lost 9.3% of their body weight compared to those who didn’t use Contrave who lost just 1% of their body weight. Also, the study also showed that Contrave does not necessitate an intensive diet and exercise program in order to work well.
