Eagan Bootcamp Instructor and Personal Trainer Tells You What You Need to Know About Low Back Pain and How to Prevent It
Low back pain (LBP) is the most common back pain. It is characterized by a sudden, sharp, and persistent or dull pain you can feel just below your waist.
It’s common for people to experience low back pain at some point in their lives. As a matter of fact, statistics show that between 70% and 85% of people experience this. And that most people under the age of 45 feel the painful effects of low back pain. Most Back pain is caused by people having muscle imbalances.
Here are some things you need to know about LBP:
• It is the most common cause of limitation in people’s activity
• It is the second reason for doctor visits
• It is the third most common indication for surgery
• It is one of the leading causes for disability
• It is the fifth reason for admissions to the hospital
The most common causes of low back pain are:
• Heavy physical work
• Lifting or sudden movement
• Bending
• Twisting
• Awkward positions
• Standing or staying in a position too long
• Existing back disorder
• Spinal stenosis
• Osteoarthritis
• Spinal infection
• Spinal tumors
• Spondylolisthesis
• Vertebral fractures
Low back pain is a serious condition. It can disable you and hinder you from moving and performing your daily tasks so you need to practice proper preventive measures.
Since there are no clear evidence that you can prevent low back pain from happening to you, there are some things you can do to reduce the risk of its occurrence.
1. Know how to lift heavy objects properly. Use your Legs not your back.
2. Practice proper posture. Protect your back while in a sitting position. When standing, you should be standing straight. The ears, shoulders, hips, and knees should be in line.
3. Avoid wearing high-heeled shoes as much as possible.
4. Maintain a healthy diet and drink plenty of water
5. Reduce stress to a minimum
6. As much as possible, maintain a healthy weight to avoid putting a strain on your back.
7. Do regular exercise. This will keep your back and shoulders strong. Among the things you can do are aerobic conditioning and other strengthening exercises.
